Teacher Leadership Academy

The Teacher Leadership Academy is a year-long training program that is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of identified teacher leaders. This program advances teacher leadership skills in preparation to successfully lead other teachers in professional development experiences. The academy consists of five days of training in which participants would be required to develop a model training project that they would implement in their district/school with colleagues.

Ashland University Credit is optional.

What We Offer/Performance Promises:

  • Five training dates (30-34 hours) scheduled throughout the school year.
  • Topics to be addressed in the training modules include:
    • Teacher as Leader (leadership theory and style, change theory, situational leadership, transformational leadership)
    • Adult Learning Theory (principles of adult learning, the brain and learning, adult learning training strategies, professional development standards)
    • Design and Preparation (developing learner outcomes, demonstration/modeling, session planning, instructional decisions, grouping methods, measuring results, preparation techniques)
    • Presentation Skills (effective training strategies, facilitation skills, questioning techniques)
    • Communication Skills (barriers to effective communication, nonverbal communication, listening skills)
    • Coaching – Reflective Practices (observation and feedback skills, reflective practices)
  • Guidance for participants in developing professional development learning activities.
  • Personal coaching/mentoring as participants progress through the academy training components.
  • Independent Project: participants will design, deliver and evaluate a professional development project.
